If you have ever planned a ‘do it yourself’ task to do in your home, you will know how you can feel before you start.
The end result is firmly fixed in your mind. It might be a new kitchen. It could be a new bathroom. It may just be a simple painting and decorating job in one room.
But whatever the task might be, you will be eager to get started as quickly as possible. Part of the reason for this is the thought that the sooner you start, the sooner you will finish. And of course you want to see the end result as well. It’s a natural feeling to have.
But you shouldn’t let this get in the way of doing all the necessary preparation. This is because good preparation paves the way for the best end result. If you get started too quickly and end up missing out a few essential steps to try and finish the job faster, you won’t end up with the result you wanted.
The preparation you need to do will vary depending on the job you have to complete. Sometimes it may take a day or more to do these steps alone. If you are ripping out an old bathroom to put a new one in for example, you might have to spend a couple of days getting everything out first. Preparing all the surfaces, perhaps dealing with any pipe work that needs moving, and getting the walls ready to receive the new tiles – this all takes time.
In contrast if you are decorating your lounge by painting the walls, ceiling and paintwork, it may take just a few hours to complete everything. This is particularly the case if your walls are already painted. Needless to say if you have to take wallpaper off first, you’ll need to get rid of all that and then prepare the walls properly as well.
You can see how important it is to allocate the proper amount of time to the preparation of your DIY job. Many people think only of the job itself, without considering any other time that may be required.
Another good point worth noting is that if you are taking time off work to do the particular job in hand, you might come unstuck if you don’t get the timings right. If you take two days off to decorate the front room when you really needed three, one of two things will happen. You will either end up with a half finished room that will stay that way until you find the time to finish it, or you will rush it and end up with a completed job that doesn’t look good. Neither outcome is very nice!
So the next time you have an important DIY job to tackle, make sure you give yourself time to plan ahead. Consider all the steps that need to be taken at each stage, and go from there. You will get much better results every single time if you do.
