This is a thorny question that deserves answering. How do you know whether the DIY advice you find online is worth following? After all, if there are any errors in the information you read, it could lead to problems ranging from the minor to the severe. It could even be dangerous.
So how do you approach the problem?
First of all you should not be afraid of finding ‘do it yourself’ information online. Some of it is extremely good, so the issue does not really lie in the quality of the information. Instead it lies in where you source it from.
It can be a good idea to find information that is relevant to your own country for starters. This might seem strange but depending on where you live there may be certain laws in place that require certain tasks to be done by a qualified expert. If you read an article that is factually correct in every way – except that it tells you that you can do something yourself instead of hiring a professional – you could run into big problems. It might be legal in that country but it doesn’t mean it is legal elsewhere.
Make sure you stick to big websites that are nationally known and respected as well. Certain institutions are well known for offering good solid DIY advice in your country, so make sure you go to them and double check everything they are telling you.
Not everyone will be able to complete every type of DIY job anyway, even if they don’t necessarily need an expert to perform certain tasks. The trick is in knowing what you yourself are capable of. The person telling you that you should be able to do this easily yourself may be a DIY expert with years of experience. They won’t know what you are comfortable doing, so make sure you consider your own skills before doing anything.
As you can see the key is to stick to reliable websites that have a reputation for accuracy. If you get your DIY information from anywhere you could end up with more chance of making an error of some kind.
So always think carefully before acting on the information you find on the very first site you come across. Would it be better to do a bit more research before acting on anything and starting a job you may not be able to finish?
