Is DIY An Appropriate Gift?

If you are still struggling with finding the perfect gift for someone you love, ask yourself whether a DIY gift would be suitable.

We’re not talking about something you would make yourself; we’re talking about a gift that could be used for performing DIY, such as a drill or a toolset for example. But how pleasant is this as a gift?

A recent survey showed that a lot of people would be disappointed with a gift like this. It’s easy to see why, but at the same time you shouldn’t let the findings of a single survey put you off buying for someone you know well. There are instances where this kind of purchase would be ideal.

For example, let’s say someone you know is always doing jobs around the house. It’s their hobby, but they don’t always have the tools they need – and they don’t always have the money to buy them either. In this case a gift of a particular item you know they would struggle to buy themselves would be perfect.

This doesn’t apply in all situations of course, and this makes it difficult to buy Christmas presents for people who do like DIY but who seem to have everything they need to do all the jobs they have to hand.

What do you do then?

This is the point where you need to think about DIY related gifts. For example you might want to buy them a book about DIY. It doesn’t have to be practical; it can be an amusing one if you like. Make sure it is relevant to their degree of knowledge though – a starter book for someone who is competent at DIY wouldn’t be a good idea for example.

There are plenty of gifts around that appeal to people with specific interests as well. And these don’t necessarily have anything to do with tools specifically. A good example is a mug with a poem or comment on DIY and DIYers on it. You could also buy some socks or a DIY themed diary for jotting down all those DIY jobs that need doing in the New Year.

As you can see the main thing to remember is that you do have plenty of options available if you want to buy an appropriate gift for a DIY fanatic. And if you know they would be delighted with a power drill then don’t worry about what any survey might say.
