When it comes to DIY a lot of us tend to focus our attentions inside the home. This is perfectly understandable as it is the place where we spend most of our time. We want to be able to look around us and appreciate our surroundings as we relax in the evenings and get some much needed rest after a long day.
But how much attention do you pay to the exterior of your house? Could you honestly stand up and say that the outside looks just as good as the inside?
Perhaps the reason why some of us are put off of tackling the exterior of our homes is because of the size and scale of them. Even if you have an average sized house you will still have to go up a ladder to reach and paint the very tops of the walls. If you don’t have a head for heights it is small wonder that you aren’t keen on doing the required DIY work!
What you need to think about though is the effects of the weather on a house that is not adequately protected. If the outside of your house is well painted then the weather will have a minimum effect on it. However, if the paint is peeling and the walls are looking grubby, you will notice the depleting effect it has on the fabric of your home. Damp can start to become a problem, not to mention mould and other nasties that you really don’t want to have present.
So, take a look at the exterior of your house and make a list of all the jobs that might need to be tackled. Don’t worry at this stage whether you think you are capable of doing them yourself or not. For example you might spot a few loose tiles on the roof. But unless you are very good with heights and you know exactly what you are doing, this is a job best left to the experts.
Don’t forget to look at things like the guttering as well. Are all the drainpipes okay and in their proper places? Do you have any loose brackets that could see them blown out of place during a storm?
Once you have made the list you can tick all the items you feel you could do on your own. You will then have the task of finding a reputable local DIY person to do the rest for you. Ask around for a reference if you can – it is always better to get someone who is recommended.
You don’t have to tackle everything in one hit either. Take things in stages and make sure you do them in the right order. As you get more and more done you will start to see your house revitalised and looking better than ever. And of course it will weather the storms better as well. You’ll notice a huge difference that is very welcome indeed.
