Are DIY Gifts A Good Idea?

To some people there is nothing worse than being given some kind of toolkit or something similar as a gift. But to others who really want such a kit they couldn’t receive anything better.

So is it really such a bad idea to think about giving someone a DIY related gift at Christmas or on their birthday?

The answer is that it depends on the person and the situation. For instance if we’re talking about someone you don’t know very well, you would probably be better off avoiding this area altogether. It could be seen as a very undesirable gift unless you know they specifically want something like this.

It is a different thing entirely if you ask someone what they want as a gift and they tell you they want a 40 piece tool set. It may also be a different situation if you know they love their DIY and they need or want something very specific that they may not be able to afford themselves. So you see, it pays to think about each individual situation before rushing out and buying something that may prove to be unsuitable for that person.

Of course the other end to the equation is the possibility that you may be good at DIY yourself. If this is the case you might be able to make something as a gift for someone else. For example let’s suppose someone in your family is a bird watcher and they love watching the birds in their own back garden. How about building a bird feeder or bird box for them to install in their garden? This would be a superb idea and you could even make it and design it to be like a miniature version of their own house.

The more complicated the gift gets, the more likely it would be that you would need special tools such as a mitre for cutting the wood to the right lengths and shapes. Always make sure you have everything you need to complete a good job if you do decide to go down this route. And give yourself plenty of time to finish the job as well – don’t make it a rush because you have started too late.

As you can see, DIY gifts can fall into two very distinct areas. Which one would suit you and the gift recipient the best?
